What is God’s Name?

God’s name is different in each age

To answer the question, ‘what is God’s name?’ we first need to answer the question, ‘what time period in God’s redemption work are we living in?’ This is because God has divided His ministry of salvation into 3 time periods known as ages. Depending on the age we live in, the name God uses is different.

Matthew 28:19-20 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

We must be baptized in the name of the saviour to be saved. However, the saviour does not have just one name. Jesus said we must be baptized in the name of the Father, the name of the Son, and the name of the Holy Spirit. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are titles much like the titles of ‘Sir’, ‘Dr’, and ‘Mr’. God, who is our saviour, must have three different names.

Will all three names of God be used at once? No. Rather, there is the time period in which the name of the Father is used – the age of the Father. There is also the time period in which the name of the Son is used – the age of the Son. Finally, there must be the time period in which the name of the Holy Spirit is used – the age of the Holy Spirit.

The age of the Father

The name of the Father we must be baptized in cannot be ‘Father.’ Instead, the name of the Father is Jehovah.

Isaiah 43:11 (ASV) “I, even I, am Jehovah; and besides me there is no saviour”

In the Old Testament times, the age of the Father, God’s name was Jehovah. Therefore, in the age of the Father the name on which God’s people were to pray in order to receive the answers to their prayers and ultimately salvation, was Jehovah.

Psalms 116:4 (ASV) Then I called upon the name of Jehovah… “deliver my soul.”

The writer of Psalms called out in prayer to Jehovah, which was the name of God, to receive salvation in the age of the Father. However, God’s name changed when the age changed from the age of the Father to the age of the Son.

The age of the Son

Acts 4:11-12 “Jesus is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

In the New Testament times, the age of the Son, God’s name was Jesus. To receive the answers to their prayers in the age of the Son, people were no longer to pray in the name of Jehovah. Instead, they were to pray in the name of Jesus.

John 16:24 “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.”

The phrase ‘until now’ denotes a certain period of time. Before the coming of Jesus as the saviour in the age of the Son people prayed in the name of Jehovah. However, Jesus explained that from the time of His coming people were to no longer pray in the name of the Father (Jehovah), but in the name of the Son (Jesus).

The age of the Holy Spirit

The Bible describes the time period in which you and I live as the last days; it is the age of the Holy Spirit. In this age, we should not pray in the name of Jehovah nor in the name of Jesus. We must pray in the name of the Holy Spirit, God’s name in this age. We can know this because Jesus said that in the last days, He would come again with a new name.

Revelation 1:1 The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place.

Revelation 3:12 “The one who is victorious… I will write on them the name of my God… and I will also write on them my new name.”

Jesus prophesied in the book of Revelation, written about what was to come in the last days, that He would give the people of God who are victorious His new name. This new name of Jesus is the name of the saviour in the last days, the age of the Holy Spirit. That means that in the age of the Holy Spirit we must pray in the new name of Jesus to receive the answers to our prayers.

God’s name in the age of the Holy Spirit

How can we know what the new name of Jesus is? Through the prophecies of the Bible, we can know that the new name of Jesus is Ahnsahnghong. Christ Ahnsahnghong is our saviour in the age of the Holy Spirit. He is the One who has fulfilled all the prophecies of the Bible.
